From Cracked to Clean

I may not always know the reason why a photo has cracks and creases, but I am certainly glad that I know how to take them from Cracked to Clean.

What treasured memories can we breathe new life into for you?

From Fractured to Fabulous

This photo restoration was one of the toughest challenges I have experienced so far.

The original was severely cracked and faded. After learning some new techniques, this photo went from fractured to fabulous!

What treasured memories can we breathe new life into for you?

A Visit with Santa

Here's the latest restoration out of the studio.

The yellow colorcast was removed, the missing parts restored, and the fading reversed.

Not only did I breathe life into a customer's treasured memory, but I hope it scored some points with Santa to get on the Nice List.

The Studio is Busy

The studio has been very busy lately and I could not be happier. I love what I do.

Unfortunately, I cannot share the most recent restorations as they are gifts that have yet to be given.

Instead, I am going to share one of my favorite photos of my in-laws.

Thanks to the invention of the camera, we can get a glimpse of precious moments from the past. In this instance, the start of my husband's family.

We'll be at the Monroe Farmers Market tomorrow from 7am-noon. Bring your family's treasured memories with you when you come to market, and we can talk about breathing new life into them.

Happy Anniversary!

Today may be St. Valentine's Day, but tomorrow would have been my grandparents' wedding anniversary. My grandfather didn't want to share their special day with a holiday so they opted for the day after.

They celebrated more than 60 years of marriage, raised 11 children, and had more than 30 grandchildren and more than 4 great-grandchildren before they passed.

In honor of their lasting love, here is a restoration of their wedding photo. I think I like the sepia-colored one better than the black-and-white version. Happy Anniversary Grandma and Poppy!

Family Ancestry

We all have ancestors, and it is great when we can look into that past through photos.

The following is a restoration of my customer's great-great-great-grandfather holding his firstborn son (my customer's great-great-great-uncle). This man built the family home and founded the farm that is still producing today.

Contact us to discuss ways we can help you restore a look at your family's history.

Let us help with your photo manipulation needs

Purple Penguin Studio is here to help with all of your photo manipulation needs, including:

Restoration

Let us breathe new life into your precious memories. We can repair cracks, tears, scratches, and splotches. Colorcasts can be removed. Fading can be reversed. In some cases, even photos with water damage can be either fully or partially restored.

Resizing

Perhaps you want a small photograph upsized to a 5x7 or 8x10. Or, maybe you want a photo reduced to put in a locket, charm, keychain, or ornament. We can upsize and downsize images to meet your needs.

Retouching

Sometimes we capture a moment that needs just a little help. The colors may need correcting or enhancing. Other times the shadows or highlights are too strong. In some cases, the photo is great except for some facial blemishes. We can touch up your photos to make them even better.

Digitization

We can scan your photos for electronic backup and storage.

Examples

Below are just a few examples of what we can do.

Need a photo resized? We can do that!

Do you have a photo that you would like resized?

We can not only restore your precious memories, but we can also upsize or downsize them.

The following is an example of a photo of my mother-in-law from when she was a little girl. It was in pretty rough shape when we first found it, so I restored it.

When she passed, we wanted to have a larger version on display at the funeral home, so I upsized it to an 8x10.

One of the granddaughters wanted to add this photo to her locket, so I downsized a version to fit into a 1.5x2.5 cm oval locket.

Other family members have asked for 5x7 versions, as well as pendants and keychains. I happily fulfilled each request.

This precious memory lives on in many different forms and sizes.

1908 Work In Progress - Pt 2

As I mentioned in my last post, this is the progress I have made so far on this photo from 1908.

It is far from being done, but I'm pretty happy with the way it is turning out.

Paternal Memories - Part 2

Last time I shared the first of two photos that I restored for a memorial service that took place this week.

The following is another shot of my customer's father in his Naval uniform. The original, taken in 1961, is a 4x4, black-and-white photo with some fading and a lot of cracks.

After it was restored, the customer asked me to crop out most of the background and turn it into a portrait-sized 5x7 and 8x10. Now you can really see him in his uniform.

What treasured memories can we breathe new life into for you?

Paternal Memories

A customer recently lost her father and brought me some family treasures that were in need of a little TLC. She had a wallet-sized photo of her dad when he first enlisted in the Navy. It was well-worn and covered in tape.

She wanted to keep some of the "authenticity" of the original photo, but there was plenty of work that still needed to be done.

Not only was I able to breathe new life into it, but I was able to enlarge it to a 5x7 and an 8x10. I am proud to say that this photo was restored and printed in time for his memorial service this week.

Tomorrow I will share another photo, but this time he is in his dress whites.

What treasured memories can we breathe new life into for you?

From Flat to Festive - The Family Farm

I'm sorry it has been awhile since I've posted. My post-surgical recovery took a little longer than expected, and I've been busy working on several photos for customers.

This particular restoration is an aerial picture of a family's farm. It was taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s. A family friend owned a small plane, so they flew over and took the photo.

The colors were worn and it had a few cracks and creases. After a little time in the studio, this family's treasured memory has gone from flat to festive.

What can we breathe new life into for you?

Saying 'I Do' All Over Again

I recently had the privilege of restoring a family photo for a bride-to-be. It was of her grandparents on their wedding day while they were cutting the cake.

This fragile gem had some frayed edges, discoloring, creases, and entire sections were missing. It was a challenge, but I am extremely pleased with the results.

This sweet bride-to-be sent me this lovely note:

Thank you so much for fixing up the photo for us. My family and especially my grandparents will LOVE it, I'm sure!

You're wonderful for doing this for us.

Thank you 💓

This makes my heart really happy.

Restoring photos is not just a job for me, rather it is a true passion. I receive much joy when I am able to breathe new life into old memories.

From Cloudy to Crisp

This is one of my favorite photos of my in-laws. It was taken sometime around 1950, when they were first married.

The original had scratches, splotches, fading, and is quite blurry. After some time in the studio, it has gone from cloudy to crisp. I also warmed it up a bit by adding a sepia tone to it.

What memories can we breathe new life into for you?

A Girl & Her Goat

This photo is from 1929, and was in desperate need of some special attention. For one of my customers, this is her favorite photo of her mom.

Not only was I able to "remove" the tape along the edges, and repair all the cracks and creases, but I was able to enlarge it from a 3.5x5 to an 8x10.

The family will be able to enjoy this photo for many generations to come.

From Washed Out to Wonderful

A customer brought me this extremely faded and worn out photo that she wanted renewed. I am thrilled with how this restoration turned out.

The details may have been hazy, but after a few hours in the studio, it went from washed out to wonderful.

Finished Project - Confirmation 1928

Here is the restored version of the 1928 Confirmation certificate.

I saved it in the following common print sizes:
  • 8x10
  • 10x13
  • 12x18
The text is clear on the final product, but was blurred for privacy and security purposes.

Current Project - Confirmation 1928

There are quite a few projects being worked on in the studio. The following is a glimpse into a Confirmation certificate from 1928 that I am restoring.

This fragile document came to me in three pieces. The text is in Polish, but I blurred it for privacy reasons.

I can't wait to see this beautiful document restored to its former glory.

It's been a while

Sorry it has been so long since I have shared anything, but my kidney issues have made it difficult for me to spend much time in the studio....
