The Studio is Hopping

The studio has been hopping. I'm working on eight (8) restorations, three (3) retouches, and five (5) custom photo keychains. 

This makes my heart very happy and grateful.

Here is a sneak peek at one of the restorations that I am working on.

It has a reddish colorcast, is washed out in places, and has a few scratches in places. I can't wait to post the finished product.

Happy Birthday Mom!

This isn't a new restoration, but it is very special to me. 

Today is my mother's birthday, and the first little girl (from the left) is her as a baby. Also pictured are three of her 10 siblings. 

As you can see, restoring family treasures is not only a passion, but very personal for me. It was preserving my own family's history that started it all.

Saving the Subjects

Some photos have portions that are beyond repair. 

The damage to the bottom section of this picture made those areas irretrievable. Luckily, the main subjects of the photo were in better condition.

During the repair process, I removed the damaged areas while saving the heart and soul of the photo.

Happy Birthday Dad!

This restoration is special and precious to me as it is a photo of my father. Today is his birthday, which makes it a perfect time to share it.

Time and the elements have taken their toll with extensive fading and some spotting.

This family heirloom has a new life and will be available for future generations to treasure and enjoy.

Almost 50 Years Old

This little jewel was taken in 1973, almost 50 years ago.

Unlike the photos we take today, there is no digital backup that can be printed to replace it. That is... until now. 

Not only did we breathe new life into it, but it is now available as a digital file that can be shared, stored, and printed almost anywhere.

Family Ancestry

We all have ancestors, and it is great when we can look into that past through photos. 

The following is a restoration of my customer's great-great-great-grandfather holding his firstborn son (my customer's great-great-great-uncle). This man built the family home and founded the farm that is still producing today.

A look at how I do it

During my last restoration project, I had three different headshots of my customer's father. 

The first was a large 16x20 photo of him that was torn in half, right through his head. There were lots of other bits and pieces from the picture's background.

The second photo was a photo of him on the back of a small mirror. Other than some fading and cracks, it wasn't in too bad of shape. The mirror was in pretty good condition also.

From Cracked to Captivating

This little gem from 1964, had been folded to fit into a frame. As a result, there are lots of cracks and creases in addition to some discoloration and fading.

From Broken to Brand New

This restoration was a challenge and absolute joy to work on. 

The newborn, hospital photo is 53 years old and had been "attached" to a ceramic plate. It is the only copy of the photo she had. The plate broke.

When she brought it to me, it was carefully wrapped up in two microfiber towels.

As you can see, age and the ceramic plate both took a toll on the photo. There were a lot of scratches and pits, but most of the outline and details were still there.

After much time in the studio, I was able to breathe new life into this treasured memory.

When my customer came to pick it up, she told me she was so happy she could cry. That brought tears of joy to my eyes and heart. I love what I do; it is my passion and joy.

From Orange to Original

This photo of a bride from July 1945, was suffering from the ravages of time. It had an orange-colorcast and a few missing sections.

The bride's daughter thought it was originally printed in black-and-white. After scanning and opening it in Photoshop, I was pleasantly surprised to uncover it was a full-color photograph instead.

Now this photo has gone from orange to original, and can proudly show off its true colors.

Paternal Memories - Part 2

Last time I shared the first of two photos that I restored for a memorial service that took place this week. 

The following is another shot of my customer's father in his Naval uniform. The original, taken in 1961, is a 4x4, black-and-white photo with some fading and a lot of cracks.

After it was restored, the customer asked me to crop out most of the background and turn it into a portrait-sized 5x7 and 8x10. Now you can really see him in his uniform.

Here Comes the Bride

This restoration has sentimental value for me. It is a photo of my grandfather walking my mother down the aisle. Come October, my parents will have been married for 54 years.

The original colors have been overrun by an orange colorcast, and there is some spotting. After a visit to the studio, it looks just like it did on the day it was taken. 

It might not be my precious memory (as I wasn't there), but it is certainly a family treasure that will be around for future generations to enjoy.

A boy and his wagon

Sticking with the 'Christmas in July' theme, there is nothing like a boy and his red wagon. Unfortunately, time was not very kind to this treasured memory.

Now it is ready to shine again and be cherished by future generations.

From Bad to Brilliant

Photos provide a glimpse into the past. They can show us people and places that are no longer here.

Time makes it mark on photos, and if they are not taken care of, those memories can be lost forever.

The following photo had some cracks, scratches, and watermark damage when it arrived in the studio. Now it can be enjoyed for many years to come. It has gone from bad to brilliant.

From Cloudy to Crisp

This is one of my favorite photos of my in-laws. It was taken sometime around 1950, when they were first married.

The original had scratches, splotches, fading, and is quite blurry. After some time in the studio, it has gone from cloudy to crisp. I also warmed it up a bit by adding a sepia tone to it.

From Glib to Gorgeous

As you have probably guessed by now, I restore a lot of family photos. That's how I got my start.

The following restoration is of my niece when she was a baby. The photo was taken while visiting relatives "down south". Parts of the original photo have green splotches, while there is an overall pinkish hue. 

Now that it has spent some time with me in the studio, it has gone from glib to gorgeous.

A customer brought me this extremely faded and worn out photo that she wanted renewed. I am thrilled with how this restoration turned out.  

The details may have been hazy, but after a few hours in the studio, it went from washed out to wonderful.

From Ravaged to Renewed

Time took its toll on this photo from the 1970s. There was extensive fading and a dual colorcast of magenta and yellow.

After some time in the studio, it went from ravaged to renewed. It will be around for many decades to come.

From Creased to Crisp

I am finally back in the studio after taking some time off to deal with a family health crisis. There will still be numerous doctor visits, but at least my husband is no longer hospitalized. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

The following restoration was a labor of love that I completed a number of years ago. I am sharing now because it is the only photo of my in-laws on their wedding day, which took place in April 1946.

The much-loved original photo had numerous cracks and was very faded. It went from creased to crisp.  Their love story will now be around for future generations to see and cherish.
