Family Fabulous

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I caught I respiratory virus just before Christmas and finally feel well enough to get into the studio.

Taking photos back in the day was a rare occasion. This family was lucky enough to have one taken of the whole family. The original was fading, worn, and cracked.

After a little time in the studio, it is now a fabulous family memory that will be around for future generations to enjoy.

What treasured memories can we breathe new life into for you?

From Fractured to Fabulous

This photo restoration was one of the toughest challenges I have experienced so far.

The original was severely cracked and faded. After learning some new techniques, this photo went from fractured to fabulous!

A Visit with Santa

Here's the latest restoration out of the studio.

The yellow colorcast was removed, the missing parts restored, and the fading reversed.

Not only did I breathe life into a customer's treasured memory, but I hope it scored some points with Santa to get on the Nice List.

It's all in the family

My customer was getting married at the end of October. Both of her parents are gone, so she wanted to have their wedding photo at the happy event.

The original photo was a 5x7, but she wanted it enlarged to an 8x10. In addition to upsizing it, there was fading, discoloration, and yellow spots all over it.

Both my customer and I love how this restoration turned out. This is what real joy feels like.

Glad to be back!

It feels great to be back in the studio after my recent health event.

I am working hard to get caught up on previously accepted projects, and get estimates sent out for newly submitted photos.

Although this isn't a recent restoration, it is one for which I am very proud. It is a photo of my grandmother as a young child. I wish I knew where this photo was taken and who the other girl is in it with her. Unfortunately, there aren't any family members from that generation still with us to help solve the mystery.

I may not know the story that goes along with this photo, but I get a chance to see what she looked like as a youngster. It also tells me from where my youngest son got his shy smile.

Happy Birthday Mom!

This isn't a new restoration, but it is very special to me.

Today is my mother's birthday, and the first little girl (from the left) is her as a baby. Also pictured are three of her 10 siblings.

As you can see, restoring family treasures is not only a passion, but very personal for me. It was preserving my own family's history that started it all.

Please join me in wishing my mom the happiest of birthdays.

It was my honor

To say it has been busy in the studio would be an understatement, but it still fills me with great joy.

As you can see, time and the sun wreaked havoc on this photo of my client's son. Now deceased, she wished to have the photo restored and copies made for her other sons so they have something with which to remember him.

Having a brother who also served in the Marine Corps, made this restoration an honor and privilege to work on. Semper Fi, oorah!

Saving the Subjects

Some photos have portions that are beyond repair.

The damage to the bottom section of this picture made those areas irretrievable. Luckily, the main subjects of the photo were in better condition.

During the repair process, I removed the damaged areas while saving the heart and soul of the photo.

Family Memories Restored

I really do love what I do. Restoring photos is my passion, it is my way of preserving the past for future generations.

With that said, I love how this one turned out.

The original had some minor fading and a red colorcast. Now its brilliant colors can shine on for many years to come.

Happy Anniversary!

Today may be St. Valentine's Day, but tomorrow would have been my grandparents' wedding anniversary. My grandfather didn't want to share their special day with a holiday so they opted for the day after.

They celebrated more than 60 years of marriage, raised 11 children, and had more than 30 grandchildren and more than 4 great-grandchildren before they passed.

In honor of their lasting love, here is a restoration of their wedding photo. I think I like the sepia-colored one better than the black-and-white version. Happy Anniversary Grandma and Poppy!

Happy Birthday Dad!

This restoration is special and precious to me as it is a photo of my father. Today is his birthday, which makes it a perfect time to share it.

Time and the elements have taken their toll with extensive fading and some spotting.

This family heirloom has a new life and will be available for future generations to treasure and enjoy.

The New Family Heirloom

According to the Meriam-Webster dictionary, an heirloom is defined as, "something of special value handed down from one generation to another."

It could be a piece of furniture, jewelry, fine china, or silver. Some of the problems with family heirlooms is that not everyone sees the sentimental value they embody, or they lack the physical space in which to house them.

Digital photos, however, are the new family heirloom that can easily be handed down through the generations.

They can be shared and stored on a computer, uploaded to the cloud, sent via email, or saved to an external hard drive.

Instead of printing, framing, and hanging them on the wall; they can be displayed in a digital photo frame along with other treasured memories.

These pictures can be included in a variety of digital or print projects such as calendars, photobooks, slideshows, and videos.

Customers receive a digital version of every photo we restore.

We are proud to help families create and share new family heirlooms.

This photo is one of my family's heirlooms as it contains four generations (from left to right: my grandmother, me, my great-grandmother, and my aunt that I'm named after).

Let the Wedding Bells Ring

I truly love what I do. Breathing new life into my customer's treasured memories and seeing how happy they are with my work brings me great happiness and fulfilment.

January 20th of this year marked 62 years since the following wedding photo was taken. Although the groom is no longer with us, his beautiful bride brought me this photo hoping it wasn't too late to get it restored.

She was so happy with the result and began to tear up when she saw what I was able to do with it. The sun had faded their faces, but now, as she happily exclaimed, "you can see our faces again." The wedding bells are ringing once more.

Moment like this, make my day.

Family Ancestry

We all have ancestors, and it is great when we can look into that past through photos.

The following is a restoration of my customer's great-great-great-grandfather holding his firstborn son (my customer's great-great-great-uncle). This man built the family home and founded the farm that is still producing today.

Contact us to discuss ways we can help you restore a look at your family's history.

Given a Second Chance

I was recently asked to restore a photo that appeared to be beyond help.

It was one of the only photos my customer had from her childhood of her whole family together. Usually her mother or father was the one taking the picture, so her other treasured memories were incomplete.

Luckily, my scanner was able to pick up enough details for me to breathe new life into it. I am proud to have given this faded family treasure a second chance.

From Washed Out to Wonderful

This customer's photo of her parents was badly faded and becoming discolored.

A little time in the studio has changed this photo from wash out to wonderful.

From Pieces to Portrait

A customer brought her father's engagement photo to be restored. It was fading and had numerous cracks.

The biggest challenge, however, is that it had been torn into two large pieces along with lots of other small bits. The tear runs straight through the head.

His left ear was almost completely lost. Luckily, I had two other portraits of him that were also being restored. These photos were in much better shape.

After re-attaching the top of his head, I was able to copy his ear from one of the other portraits and "paste" it into the engagement photo to replace what was missing.

His photo went from pieces to a complete portrait.

A look at how I do it

During my last restoration project, I had three different headshots of my customer's father.

The first was a large 16x20 photo of him that was torn in half, right through his head. There were lots of other bits and pieces from the picture's background.

Note: Click the photo to view a larger version.

The second photo was a photo of him on the back of a small mirror. Other than some fading and cracks, it wasn't in too bad of shape. The mirror was in pretty good condition also.

The third photo, I saved a few stills at various stages of the restoration process. The following is a video I created that shows the progression from start to finish. The before and after photos are below the video.

Christmas 1995

To some, 1995 doesn't seem like it is too long ago. However, 26 years can take a toll on a family's precious memories.

Because the photo was printed from a film camera, one would need the original negative and a developing studio to get another copy. It isn't a digital photo that can be printed over and over.

There wasn't a lot wrong with this photo other than some fading and a slight colorcast.

After a little time in the studio, it has been digitized and restored to its former glory. It will last for many generations to come.

Let us breathe new life into your family's treasured memories.

It's been a while

Sorry it has been so long since I have shared anything, but my kidney issues have made it difficult for me to spend much time in the studio....
