It's all in the family

My customer was getting married at the end of October. Both of her parents are gone, so she wanted to have their wedding photo at the happy event.

The original photo was a 5x7, but she wanted it enlarged to an 8x10. In addition to upsizing it, there was fading, discoloration, and yellow spots all over it.

Both my customer and I love how this restoration turned out. This is what real joy feels like.

Print Size Matters

The studio has been hopping with photo restorations and custom photo necklaces and keychains.

Until I am able to share some of our restorations, I wanted to remind everyone that the print size you choose for your photos does matter.

Not all print sizes are the same.

Photos can be printed at a variety of sizes such as 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10. Many can be formatted to be printed in landscape (longest side along top and bottom), or portrait (longest side along left and right) mode.

The ability to print at these sizes and modes depends on the size of the original file. 

A common misconception is that photos can be printed exactly the same as a 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10. 

There are, however, slight differences among the print sizes.  

The following graphic shows the same image as it was cropped as an 8x10, 5x7, and 4x6. 

The 8x10 photo contains everything from the original photo. As the photo size gets smaller, less of the window and cabinets are visible.

Unless told otherwise, our restoration experts try to keep as much of the original image as possible when we print the same photo in multiple sizes.

Photo Size Differences - 4x4 to 5x7

As I mentioned in a previous post, not all file sizes are proportional. When you resize a photo, portions of it may be removed to fit the new file size.

Last time, I gave you an example of what happens to a 4x4 photo when it is resized to a 4x6. This file size results in more of the photo being cropped out. 

The following shows what happens to a 4x4 (square) photo when it is resized to a 5x7 (rectangle). 

The 5x7 retains more of the original photo than the 4x6 because it is closer in proportion to the 4x4.

Some photo labs still offer square printing, which if selected, would mean none of the photo would be removed.

Photo Size Differences - 4x4

Most people know that photos can be printed in a variety of sizes such as 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 to name a few.

What may not be widely known is that not all file sizes have the same ratio which means when they are resized, portions of the photo may be lost.

The following provides an example of what happens to a 4x4 (square) photo when it is resized to a 4x6 (rectangle). The square format was a typical size for photos printed prior to the mid 1970s.

As you can see, the "portrait" version has parts of the left and right sides removed. The "landscape" version loses parts along the top and bottom.

Some photo labs still offer square photo printing.

Photo Upsizing

Need a photo enlarged? We can do that.

Some customers have asked us to upsize their photos for a variety of uses, such as:

• A poster for a birthday party, anniversary, or funeral
• A photo as part of a headstone

Need a photo resized? We can do that!

Do you have a photo that you would like resized?

We can not only restore your precious memories, but we can also upsize or downsize them.

The following is an example of a photo of my mother-in-law from when she was a little girl. It was in pretty rough shape when we first found it, so I restored it. 

When she passed, we wanted to have a larger version on display at the funeral home, so I upsized it to an 8x10.

One of the granddaughters wanted to add this photo to her locket, so I downsized a version to fit into a 1.5x2.5 cm oval locket. 

Other family members have asked for 5x7 versions, as well as pendants and keychains. I happily fulfilled each request. 

This precious memory lives on in many different forms and sizes.
