Not all print sizes are the same
Not All Print Sizes are the Same
Photos can be printed at a variety of sizes such as 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10. Many can be formatted to be printed in landscape (longest side along top and bottom), or portrait (longest side along left and right) mode.
The ability to print at these sizes and modes depends on the size and resolution of the original file. This is why we scan all images that we restore at a resolution of 1200 ppi (pixels per inch). The high resolution allows us to increase the possible print sizes without sacrificing any quality.
A common misconception is that most print sizes are proportional, and that photos can be printed exactly the same as a 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10.
However, they are not proportional. There will be slight differences among the print sizes.
The following graphic shows the same image as it was cropped in landscape mode as an 8x10, 5x7, and 4x6.
The 8x10 photo contains a large section of the window and kitchen cabinets. As the photo size get smaller, less of the window and cabinets are included.
Our restoration experts do our best to keep as much of the original image as possible when we crop photos to be printed at multiple sizes.

From Bad to Brilliant
Photos provide a glimpse into the past. They can show us people and places that are no longer here.
Time makes it mark on photos, and if they are not taken care of, those memories can be lost forever.
The following photo had some cracks, scratches, and watermark damage when it arrived in the studio. Now it can be enjoyed for many years to come. It has gone from bad to brilliant.

Summer in the 70s
Here is a photo from the 1970s that I recently worked on.
The original is faded and has a magenta colorcast. There are some "missing" spots that are difficult to see with the naked eye.
Now that it has been restored, I have to wonder what she was thinking about. She looks deep in thought.

From Rusty to Refreshing
This little gem from the late 1970s is another casualty of the red colorcast that affects many photos from that decade.
Now that I have spent some time giving it some TLC, it has gone from rusty to refreshing.

From Glib to Gorgeous
As you have probably guessed by now, I restore a lot of family photos. That's how I got my start.
The following restoration is of my niece when she was a baby. The photo was taken while visiting relatives "down south". Parts of the original photo have green splotches, while there is an overall pinkish hue.
Now that it has spent some time with me in the studio, it has gone from glib to gorgeous.

It's been a while
Sorry it has been so long since I have shared anything, but my kidney issues have made it difficult for me to spend much time in the studio....
